21st Century Breakdown
As long-time readers may recall, I’m a big Green Day fan and have been ever since my brother used to blast “When I Come Around” through my bedroom walls in the 90s. Ah, remember those days? I was probably wearing flannel shirts and skater jeans and practicing kissing on my hand. Hahaha. Anyway, I recently picked up a copy of their newest album, “21st Century Breakdown,” and I thought I’d use this rather uneventful evening to write a little review. If you’re not a Green Day fan, sorry my dears, for I’ve got nothin’ but love for Billie Joe and the gang. Hmmm… I should add him to my list of Unattainable Men, don’t you think? : )
I bought the album knowing that “Know Your Enemy” was the newest single, and being absolutely in love with every Green Day song that pops up on the radio (including this one), I figured I’d like the entire album and might as well just cough up the cash for my own little slice of Green Day heaven. And dudes, it did not disappoint. In addition to “Know Your Enemy,” the other big single on the album is “21 Guns.” Have you heard this yet? I haven’t heard it on the radio and had the pleasure of listening to it for the first time this afternoon, and I have to say, I really dig it, for lack of a more sophisticated expression. : ) It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and energized and mellow in all the right places, know what I mean? It’s also getting more and more clear with each album that they release that they’ve come a long way from the teen-angst garage-band stuff (which I loved, don’t get me wrong) and have evolved into something really interesting and intriguing. Go check out “21 Guns” when you get a chance, and let me know what you think.Â
I actually haven’t gotten to the end of the album yet, so I have a few more goodies waiting for me tomorrow. Considering the lack of excitement in my life these days, it’s comforting to know that I’ve got a little Billie Joe on the back burner. If only I could get my hands on him in person… : )

I’m really warming to Greenday’s music, although not so keen on the lead singers voice (but that’s personal preference only).
So I recorded Time of Your Life myself just for the sheer hell of it. Injected it with more fun that angst and had a great time.
Very impressive song writing.
August 11th, 2009 at 3:02 amGreat post. I agree, they’ve really evolved musically. I actually went to their show two weeks ago at MSG and blogged about. Btw I actually did see a young gal literally get her hands on Billy Joe.

Tony – Don’t like Billie Joe’s voice??? For shame! I can no longer associate with you, my dear. : )
Mr NYC – So jealous – both of you seeing the show and of that lucky girl who managed to get a piece of Billie Joe! *swoon*

Yeah, this album kind of sucked. If it had come out two years after American Idiot, I’d have been fine with it. To wait half a decade to come out a watered down version of your previous album though, that’s just kind of crappy. Their “Foxboro Hot Tubs” side project album they came out last year was way better than this thing. It’s been an off kilter year for music anyways. All the good stuff I’ve bought has been in the past couple months anyways, with the exception of the new New Found Glory and A Day To Remember albums that came out at the beginning. Hopefully the 2nd half of this year comes out better with the new Thrice album today, and stuff from Brand New, The Menzingers, Against Me! and others coming in the 2nd half. I really want a new Motion City Soundtrack album to hit too.
