Dating (mis)adventures of an unexpectedly sexy New Yorker

  • About Me

I’m a 30-year-old (!!!), single, charming, and totally dorky girl taking on the ridiculous New York dating scene. When guys are surprised to see a sex kitten emerge from behind my dorky exterior, I just smile and reply, “Who ever said that dorks can’t be sexy?" [More]

The dreaded photo holiday card is dreaded no more

30 Nov 2009

Hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving!  Sorry for the radio silence around here – I kind of fell off the map over the long holiday weekend.  It happens.  : )

Now that Thanksgiving is over (and now that tomorrow is December 1st – yikes!), the holiday season is officially upon us… and you know what that means – holiday cards.  Yes, the dreaded holiday cards have returned to bite me in the ass once again, what with everyone’s new spouses, new babies, new houses, and worst of all – the photo holiday cards that slap you in the face with photos of gorgeous families with smiling children, proud parents, and pets dressed in Santa hats.  Oh, the humanity of it all!  MUST I be subjected to this needless rubbing-in-my-face of everyone’s success and my own failure?  MUST we go through this AGAIN, really???  I went off on a bit of a tirade at this time last year, but I’m proud to report that this year, I’m taking a stand.

I’ve always wanted to send out a photo holiday card of my own, but I never did it because I don’t have a “family” to photograph and slap on the oh-so-jolly card.  But you know what?  WHO FUCKING CARES???  This year I decided to fuck it, embrace my life for what it is instead of worrying about what it’s not, and send out a photo holiday card of my very own – with a big photo of myself, and no one else.  Take that, friends and family!  I am my OWN immediate family, and my holiday card will have a beautiful photo of me smiling and looking pretty and spreading holiday joy and merriment.  As it should be.

I am SO proud of myself for doing this, as it represents one more little step in the right direction.  Over the past year or so, I’ve been actively trying to take hold of my life and embrace the things I can’t control.  Why should I be deprived of sending out a photo holiday card if I’m a single woman?  I shouldn’t be!  So I’m embracing my singledom and splattering it all over my friends and family for all to see.  Suck on THAT, my dears.  : )

Please don’t, that’s really sad and desperate.

Haha, you’ve reminded me that I need to pick a photo and send out my Christmas cards…at least partly because when I sent out my graduation announcements in May the address labels got cut incorrectly and now everyone only has part of my actual apartment number.

Last year we used pictures we’d taken the previous year in front of the Christmas display at the Bellagio. I have to look through my photos, but this year I think I’ll use photos from last year’s trip to the State Fair…they’re not Christmasy technically, but I do have some Ferris Wheel shots that show all the lights and everything over the entire fairgrounds.

    Nah…too easy.

Not a Christmas Card kind of guy. But do receive cards from others including a friend of mine who decorates their pet every year for the cover. Cheesy yeah, but the sentiment is appreciated nonetheless.

That’s great. I don’t see why it would be sad and desperate at all.
Now, I’m a Jew, so I can’t claim to have a full understanding of this, but I thought the point of Christmas cards was so that people knew a) that you are thinking of them and b) have a chance to reconnect and feel close to you by knowing what’s going on in your life.
Why is a family necessary for this to be a good idea? Is the whole point just to show off the kids? That’s sad.

Ozgirl – I just picked a nice photo of myself from a friend’s wedding a few months ago. There were some flowers in the background, so it was a nice shot. No big deal! I’m really excited to see how they turned out. : )

Hammer – You’re so predictable! I always know which posts you’ll comment on and exactly what you’re going to say. Good thing you’re not on my holiday card list, huh?

Honey – Sounds great! I don’t think you necessarily need a “Christmasy” photo for your card – just a nice shot with a big smile or two. Good luck picking something out!

Shannon – Ha, I was just talking about that with a friend yesterday – she always dresses up her cat for her holiday cards. Hilarious and cute. As you said, the sentiment is definitely appreciated.

M.S. – Exactly – holiday cards are a nice gesture, and photo or not, I love sending and receiving them. It’s a good way to spread the love around the holidays. Despite the internet and email, it’s still nice to get a paper card in the mail. : )

Hey, I picked a photo card from Walgreen’s that has 3 photos, so there’s one from our 3-year anniversary, one from a ski trip we took, and one with the traditional desert background. I bet yours is great, too!
